Burkina Faso has been excluded from the preferential trade agreement with the United States, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), since January 1. This exclusion is due to the coup d'État and is a heavy blow for artisan exporters who are already well affected by the security crisis in the country.

AGOA was established in 2000 and the list of beneficiary countries is revised every year. It establishes preferential economic and commercial cooperation with the African continent. For example, it facilitates African exports to the United States. Indeed, the exclusion of Burkina Faso from this program is a heavy blow for the country's artisans.

According to Mohamed Zongo, manager of the Cissé Diaffara et Frère gallery, “there are customers in the United States who make orders. We export loincloths, wooden stools and also masks. But we mainly export loincloths and baskets.” Already tested by the security and health crisis, the cottage industry is dying in Burkina Faso. For some artisans, the consequences of this exclusion will not be unilateral.
