Intending to finance renewable energy projects, the World Bank signed an agreement with four countries in West and Central Africa worth $311 million.

The funds provided by the BM will finance approximately 106 megawatts (MW) of solar power generation capacity with energy and battery storage systems, and a 41 MW expansion of hydroelectric capacity. The countries benefiting from it are Sierra Leone, Liberia, Togo and Chad. They will also support electricity distribution and transmission interventions.

Selon le président de Sierra Léon Julius Maada Bio , having presided over the signing ceremony on Wednesday, February 01, 2023, the agreement was the start of a revolution in energy supply and access in the respective countries. In reality, West and Central Africa have one of the lowest electrification rates coupled with some of the highest electricity costs in sub-Saharan Africa. Like rising fuel prices, energy costs have increased further due to the effects of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
