In 2022, the National Electricity Company of Senegal (Senelec) devoted 267 billion CFA francs to support households. But this amount was reassessed according to the managing director of the state-owned company Pape Mademba Biteye, during a press conference held on January 13, 2023.

“Until then, for each KWH consumed, the household paid 101.06 FCFA and the State 43.93 FCFA”, informs Pape Mademba Biteye. According to him, this uniform scheme applied to all brackets so that “the more you consumed the more you benefited from the subsidy” he specifies. Senelec has rebalanced the subsidy to an average increase of 16% for low customers. An increase that does not concern the vulnerable social group. These are 1,159,146 households.

This relative increase, according to IMF guidelines, will fuel debate in a country facing commodity inflation and which has just seen fuel prices at the pump rise. In reality, Senegal's installed capacity increased from 712 MW in 2012 to 1600 MW in 2022 with 32% of the energy mix in renewable energy. According to the CEO of Senelec, the power outage went from 2 days in 2011 to one day in 2022.
