VTB was targeted by a massive cyberattack in December. With the same technique, Ukrainian banking institutions were targeted in early February.

The second Russian bank suffered a large-scale cyberattack on December 6 that has not been formally attributed, while the conflict is raging between Ukraine and Russia. According to VTB, “the bank's technological infrastructure is undergoing an unprecedented cyberattack from abroad. The most important not only this year, but since the bank has been in business.” Indeed, the public bank was targeted by a “DDoS” (distributed denial of service) attack with the intention of overwhelming the target's servers with an unusual volume of requests, in order to paralyze them. VTB said that computers located in Russia participated in the attack and decided to give Russian IP addresses to the authorities.
