A symposium brought together experts from the Economic Community of Central African States (CEMAC) on 17 and 18 November in Libreville. Over two days, they focused on the reform of the CFA franc.

“Money and Development in Central Africa”. This is the term around which the CEMAC countries have discussed. This meeting aims to propose to heads of state ways to reform or get rid of this currency inherited from the colonial era.

The countries of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEMAC), namely Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African Republic and Chad, are looking at the future of the CFA franc, as is ECOWAS. At the end of the conference, on 17 and 18 November, experts on monetary and development issues in the region made proposals to the CEMAC Heads of State on the conditions and framework for new monetary cooperation with France.

On occasion, two options have been debated. Firstly, the aim will be to get rid of the CFA franc by launching a regional currency instead. Second, evaluate the main current mechanisms of monetary cooperation with France, while remaining linked to this currency inherited from the colonial era.
