At the end of a meeting between the transitional president Ibrahim Traoré, Burkinabe employers and social partners, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Aboubacar Nacanabo declared on Friday, December 9, 2022 that the Burkinabe government, resulting from a coup, intends to mobilize 152 million euros.

152 million euros are being mobilized for a “war support fund” against the jihadism that has plagued Burkina Faso since 2015. A fund that, according to Aboubacar Nacanabo, “must make it possible to raise 100 billion CFA francs (152 million euros) for the year 2023”. For him, “as part of the fight against terrorism, the government has decided to recruit 50,000 Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP, civilian army substitutes) who will be paid 60,000 FCFA per month, or 91 euros”.

NACANABO believes that “in addition to this care, there are weapons to pay for to equip them, outfits for their clothing, equipment and fuel for their travel.” During a meeting with the French ambassador to Burkina Faso on December 1, the Burkinabe Prime Minister, Apollinaire Kiélem de Tembela, asked France for “arms and ammunition” for army substitutes. Burkina Faso is regularly mourned by jihadist attacks that have caused thousands of deaths and forced some two million people to flee their homes since 2015.
