Over the past month, as fear stalked global banks, open interest in bitcoin options and futures skyrocketed. It reached an all-time high of 433,540 contracts on March 23 on Deribit, a leading exchange for derivatives focused on cryptocurrencies.
In contrast, in the 12 months prior to March, open interest was between 150,000 and 300,000, which gives an idea of investor participation in a market. Most options traders are betting on a rise in the price of bitcoin, with open interest in call options for 206,979 contracts on Deribit, more than double the bearish put options (93,857).
