Based on joint research with Elliptic, a London-based blockchain analysis firm, it is noted that North Korea stole $721 million worth of cryptocurrencies from Japan between 2017 and the end of 2022.

The $721 million represents 30% of what Pyongyang is said to have stolen worldwide via its cyberattacks during this period. This sum is 8.8 times higher than the amount of its exports in 2021. Vietnam, the United States, and Hong Kong were the biggest victims of North Korean piracy in addition to Japan
