The World Bank announced in a statement published on its website on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, the arrival of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and the Director General of World Bank Operations, Anna Bjerde, in Chad. Their mission comes to an end on Friday, September 8.

The joint visit is aimed at assessing the extent of the influx of refugees fleeing the Sudanese crisis into Chadian territory, and strengthening the response on the ground. In fact, more than 1 million refugees are registered on Chadian soil, making the country the fifth largest refugee host country in the world per inhabitant. According to the World Bank statement, the crisis in neighboring Sudan is contributing to the sharp increase in forced displacement to Chad, with 400,000 new arrivals since 15 April 2023.
