After the “investigation” phase, which began in October 2021, the ECB will open the phase, which will consist, over the next two years, in finalizing the development of operating rules, selecting providers capable of providing the necessary technical infrastructure, and conducting experiments. In fact, the final decision on whether or not to create this new form of the single currency will only be taken after October 2023 by the Governing Council, provided that the necessary legislative changes have been adopted by the institutions of the European Union . However, the ECB is trying to clarify what the digital euro would look like if it were finally put at the disposal of the 347 million people who make payments every day in the twenty countries of the euro zone
