The decision of the Lagos Tax Appeal Court follows an appeal filed by the telecommunications group's subsidiary, headquartered in Africa from the South. In fact, in July 2021, the FIRS issued an initial VAT assessment of $93.6 million to MTN, including $72.55 million in principal and $21.04 million in penalties and interest. For its part, MTN contested this assessment. A new revised valuation was issued on April 14, 2022, bringing the amount to $135.7 million. MTN remained dissatisfied with this review and appealed to the Tax Appeal Tribunal. The court ruled in favor of the Lagos Tax Authority for collecting a principal amount of $72.5 million and overturned the penalties in favor of MTN,
after review.
