The mobilization of financial resources through ESG bonds reached a record this year 2024 in Africa. The value of international debt instruments issued by African entities to mobilize resources for responsible investments (ESG) reached $4.4 billion between January and February 2024

.

Issues between January and February 2024 represent nearly four times the total number of ESG bonds (compliant with social, environmental and governance requirements) from the region in 2023, which amounted to $1.4 billion. In January 2024, the African Development Bank (AfDB) successfully tested an issue of social bonds worth 2 billion dollars. In the wake of this operation, it issued hybrid sustainable bonds worth 750 million dollars

.

Another institution that has also intervened in this market is the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA). With the support of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) as the main arranger, it issued up to 500 million euros. For the time being, this market dynamic has benefited the French financial group BNP Paribas, which currently dominates the ranking of arrangers of this type of bond on the continent, with 17.5% market share. It is followed by the American institutions JPMorgan and Bank of America Securities
