In an effort to stimulate growth and improve the efficiency of the world's second largest cocoa producer, the elected president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has committed to reorganizing the cocoa sector and the public regulator.

John Dramani Mahama criticized in an interview on Friday that the structure of the cocoa industry, in which the cocoa marketing board (COCOBOD) competes with farmers for profits. COCOBOD controls all aspects of cocoa production in Ghana, from planting to the supply of jute bags to package beans for export. The elected president of Ghana said that his government would develop the modalities for restructuring, referring to the involvement of the private sector in some areas managed by COCOBOD. As leader of the National Democratic Congress party, Mahama will take office on January 7, as the economy recovers from the worst crisis it has seen in a generation. The reforms he proposes aim to increase the efficiency of the cocoa sector value chain, with the farmer being the main beneficiary, not bureaucracy
