The decline in profitability of Airtel Nigeria reflects the continuing inflationary pressures on its businesses, in particular the increase in the cost of diesel used to power its network infrastructure. Rising fuel costs caused a significant drop in the company's operating margin, which fell by 557 basis points to 48.8%
.According to the report, “Average diesel prices in Nigeria have increased by around 60% compared to the previous period. In the third quarter of 2025, EBITDA margins of 48.8% were 645 basis points lower than the previous year's levels, reflecting both the increase in diesel prices and the $7 million advantage in one-time operating expenses in the third quarter
of 2024.”The National Bureau of Statistics for its part indicates that diesel prices averaged 1,426.09 N per liter per month in 2024, with telecom operators consuming more than 50 million liters of diesel each month to power their infrastructures.
