The dollar index, measured against a basket of six counterparts, was stable at 103.81 at 00:36 GMT, after climbing 0.36% on Thursday. The dollar gained 0.07% to 148.88 yen and remained stable against its Canadian counterpart at 1.4321 CAD
.Risk-sensitive Australian and New Zealand dollars remained on the defensive after sharp declines on Thursday, as concerns about the economic drag caused by US President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff campaign on global trade shook sentiment.
The Russian ruble strengthened slightly against the US dollar on Friday before the central bank's rate-setting meeting, after a two-day correction that interrupted the rally fuelled by talks between the United States and Russia. At 8:40 GMT, the ruble was up 0.5% to 84.52 against the dollar on the over-the-counter market. The Russian currency lost around 4% against the dollar in the previous two days, but gained more than 25% again this year.
The Chinese yuan fell to its lowest level in a week against the dollar on Friday and seems set for a week of losses, reflecting a rebound in the greenback in foreign markets, while the central bank continued to reduce support through its official daily fixation.
The onshore yuan hit a low of 7.2524 per dollar during morning trading, the lowest level since March 14, before changing hands at 7.2484 at 03:00 GMT, while its offshore counterpart traded at 7.2530.The Ugandan shilling remained stable on Friday morning, with activity remaining moderate on both the demand and supply sides, traders said. At 07:26 GMT, commercial banks quoted the shilling at 3,660/3,670, the same level as at the close on
Thursday.
