The Angolan government recovered $200 million from JPMorgan Chase & Co. which it used as additional collateral for a loan from the American lender, the Department of Finance said.

JPMorgan and Angola signed a $1 billion, one-year derivative contract in December, known as a total return swap, backed by $1.9 billion in dollar government bonds.

In early April, JPMorgan required additional guarantees from the southern African crude oil exporter after a sharp drop in oil prices following tariff turbulence affected the value of Angolan bonds provided as collateral.

“The improvement in the price of Angolan eurobonds has a positive impact, making it possible to return to the State the amount paid in accordance with the margin call. This reimbursement has already taken place,” the Ministry of Finance told Reuters, adding that it received the funds in May.

The collateral bond price for the JPMorgan loan fell from 100 cents to the dollar at the end of March to a low of 86 cents during the massive selloff in early April when the margin call was invoked, before returning to March levels.
