.Nigeria is launching two innovative, data-based livestock insurance policies to bring climate-smart protection to over 20,000 farmers as part of a pilot project in four northern states, reducing conflicts and strengthening peaceful and resilient rural communities.
This event brought together a broad network of actors from governments, development institutions, the insurance sector, and farmers' and herder associations. Key partners in this initiative include the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Africa Re, the World Bank Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Dalili Advisors, the InsuResilience Investment Fund (BlueOrchard), Africa Re, the World Bank's Livestock Productivity and Resilience Project (L-PRES),
and local insurers. The new products — Index Livestock Insurance* and Animal Encroachment Insurance** — were developed as part of a two-year feasibility study conducted by IFC, Africa Re, and Dalili in the states of Sokoto, Bauchi, Adamawa and Plateau in northern Nigeria. This study established a clear link between drought-related conditions and rising tensions over land and water resources, which are often a source of encroachments and conflicts. These products were designed as practical, evidence-based solutions to help protect the livelihoods of herders and farmers in affected regions.
