After the rise in the price of sugar, the Government of Senegal decrees the suspension of the temporary import tax. On the instructions of the Head of State, Macky Sall, the Minister of Finance and Budget, Abdoulaye Daouda Diallo, wrote to the Director General of Customs, Abdourahmane Dièye for the effectiveness of this decision.

The Government of Senegal has not remained insensitive to the increase noted, for a few days, on the price of sugar in Dakar and in several localities of the country. The Minister of Finance and Budget, Abdoulaye Daouda Diallo ordered the Director General of Customs, Abdourahmane Dièye to suspend the temporary import tax (Tci) for 45 days. "To mitigate the effect of the combined increase in the cost of maritime freight prices on international markets, following the request of the Minister of Trade and SMEs, I instruct you to suspend, from August 30 to October 15, 2021, the application of the economic tax (Tci) on imported refined sugar”, we read in this memorandum signed by the state treasurer.

According to a document relating to the customs clearance of sugar published in the official site of the Senegalese Customs, it is indicated that the temporary import tax (Tci) is applied when the customs value of the goods is lower than the trigger price fixed by the WAEMU Commission. As a result, all duties and taxes liquidated under the common external tariff (Tec) are based on this value.
