Arrested in 2020 near Paris after 25 years on the run, Félicien Kabuga is the alleged "financier" of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994 and one of the last main suspects of the massacre that tore the African country apart. He is accused of having participated in the creation of the Hutu Interahamwe militia, the armed wing of the Hutu genocidal regime.
Félicien Kabuga's trial opens Thursday before a United Nations tribunal in The Hague. The former businessman, now 87, was one of Rwanda's richest men in 1994. He is on trial for having put his fortune and his networks at the service of the genocide which, according to the UN, killed more than 800,000 people, mainly among the Tutsi minority.
France: #MeToo has been shaking up society for five years
Five years ago, hundreds of thousands of women around the world shared the hashtag #MeToo to denounce sexual and gender-based violence: this movement caused an earthquake whose tremors continue to reverberate, but there is still a long way to go to eradicate such behavior.
On October 15, 2017, American actress Alyssa Milano published a message inviting women victims of sexual harassment to testify on Twitter using the hashtag "#MeToo". She brings out of oblivion this keyword (created in 2006) a few days after the publication in the American press of two explosive investigations on the assaults and rapes committed by the film producer Harvey Weinstein, with impunity for years. It is a worldwide tsunami: the testimonies invade the social network in a few days. Demonstrations are organized in different countries.
Climate change: Hurricane Ian creates "catastrophic" floods in Florida
Powerful Hurricane Ian was sweeping across Florida on Wednesday, its high winds and torrential rains having already caused "catastrophic" flooding and widespread power outages. Slightly out of the path of the hurricane, near the Keys archipelago, bad conditions caused a boat carrying migrants to capsize, and the coast guard was still looking for twenty people, who were in the area.Coast guards were still searching for 20 people, three of whom were rescued and four who managed to swim to shore.
Carrying winds of up to 185 km/h, Ian made landfall along the coast of Cayo Costa, in the southwestern part of the state, at 15:05 local time (19:05 GMT), according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). The hurricane caused "catastrophic" flooding, the center said. Until now classified as category 4, of the 5 that comprise the Saffir-Simpson scale, Ian is now in category 3 but remains destructive, according to the same source.
