The amount of deposits collected by waeMU decentralized financial systems (DFS) reached 1,473.7 billion CFA francs as of December 31, 2019, compared to 1,243.2 billion a year earlier, an increase of 18.5%, according to the BCEAO.
"This increase is recorded in Mali (+31.0%), Burkina Faso (+22.9%), Côte d'Ivoire (+19.8%), Togo (+18.4%), Senegal (+16.5%), Niger (+14.8%) and Benin (+5.1%)", underlines the BCEAO in a report on the situation of microfinance in the WAEMU.
The report indicates that there is, on the other hand, a decline in Guinea-Bissau (-6.2%).
It reports a "preponderance" of demand deposits, with a share of 59.2%
"Term deposits and other deposits account for 19.9% and 20.9% respectively," the report adds.
It indicates that "50.5% of the savings mobilized by the SFDs were made up by men, 26.5% by women and 23.0% by groups > <".
Outstanding LOANS from EU DFS increased by 10.0% compared to their level at the end of December 2018, amounting to CFAF 1,555.6 billion.
"This increase is observed in Mali (+26.7%), Togo (18.3%), Côte d'Ivoire (+16.9%), Senegal (+5.0%), Burkina Faso (+4.6%) and Niger (1.4%)", adds the document.
However, it notes a decrease in Guinea-Bissau (-29.1%) and Benin (-2.6%)
A share of 50.0% of the outstanding loans of microfinance institutions is made up of short-term assistance. Medium- and long-term loans accounted for 31.3% and 18.6% respectively for the same period.
According to the report, 57.6% of the loans went to the male clientele of the SFDs, the female clientele and the groups benefiting respectively from 30.3% and 15.6% of the financing.
The BCEAO reports that 16 microfinance institutions "were under provisional administration at the end of December 2019" : seven in Benin, two in Burkina Faso, as many in Niger and Togo, one in Côte d'Ivoire, as many in Mali and Senegal.
