support the economy, the Ghanaian government announced Thursday, November 13
the abolition of the health stimulus tax linked to Covid-19, as well as a
reduction in the effective VAT rate.
The health stimulus tax linked to Covid-19 at
Ghana, created in 2021, was a tax levied on income to finance
health measures and the resumption of economic activities. The minister of
Finances, Cassiel Ato Forson, announced that these measures will allow
“return 5.7 billion cedis (about 520 million dollars) to
businesses and households” as early as 2026. In addition to the abolition of the tax
Covid, the plan provides for the abolition of VAT on mineral exploration,
the application of a zero rate for textiles produced locally until
2028, as well as the increase in the VAT registration threshold by 200,000
Cedis (18,000 dollars) to 750,000 cedis (68,000 dollars).
Inflation slowed to 8 per cent in October in the country, marking the tenth consecutive month of disinflation and a return, for the for the first time in four years, at the government's target range, between 6 and 10%.
GDP grew by 6.3% in the first half
2025, compared to 5.3% over the same period in 2024, in particular thanks to sectors
services, agriculture and construction.
