By succeeding in convincing his ECOWAS counterparts on the merits of the exclusion of certain products under embargo against Mali, Senegalese President Macky Sall has not only defended the interests of his country, but it has also protected  Mali from a total embargo.

 During the videoconference meeting of heads of state devoted to the situation in Mali, held on Friday, August 20, 2020, the President of Senegal, Macky Sall, like any good democrat, condemned the coup d'état in Mali. Abdul Wade's successor called on ECOWAS to "reassess the sanctions announced to take into account humanitarian imperatives".

From this perspective, basic necessities, petroleum products and pharmaceuticals should not be affected by the embargo. This amendment was accepted and incorporated into the final declaration.

Speaking at this extraordinary summit, the Head of State of Senegal also advocated the same lucidity regarding the use of force that "would require a MANDATE FROM THE UN". Accompanying Mali through dialogue for a return to constitutional order is President Sall's position.

By doing so, President Macky Sall has succeeded in convincing his peers and cleverly lessening the consequences of the embargo in his country.

According to data from the authorities of the country of Terranga, Senegal is the country where more than 70% of Mali's goods transit. Among the Malian products that pass through Senegal and generate resources for the Senegalese treasury are the goods that Macky has asked to be set aside, that is to say that they are not among the products under embargo.

According to data from the Dakar Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, the transport of goods between Senegal and Mali is dominated by nearly 80% of Malian truck drivers.

Port estimates are more explicit. Malian transit reaches more than  60% in the transport of hydrocarbons. And on this transport of hydrocarbons, "the monopoly is de facto, in favor of Malians".

Going back to 2014, the figures are explicit on the products defended at the conference by Mr. Sall. The Dakar-Bamako transit was estimated at 2,796,867 tons. These maritime imports and exports for Mali are composed of: petroleum products (20.45%), food products (15.59%), agricultural products mainly cotton (2.47%), chemical and mining products (46.28%) etc.

It should be noted that between Senegal and Mali, the road has a rotation of 300 trucks per day.
