The Agro-Industrial Transformation Zone Project (PZTA-Sud), located in Casamance (Ziguinchor, Sédhiou and Kolda) was officially launched at the end of 2022. The objective of this project is to develop the added value of agricultural products and agro-industry.

The African Development Bank (BAD ), the Islamic Development Bank (BID) and the Senegalese State have invested 140 billion FCFA (213 million €) in financing for the total cost of the project. The Minister in charge of Industrial Development and Small and Medium-sized Industries, Moustapha Diop, justifies the choice of Casamance in view of the underexploited agro-ecological potential.

According to him, “Casamance alone provides 56% of national mango production and 80% of national cashew production. Unfortunately, 30 to 45% of this production is lost after harvest due, among other things, to the lack of infrastructure, technology, logistics and finance. This situation has a negative impact on the processing rate of the priority sectors selected, which is 2% for mango and 5% for cashew.” Thus, with the PZTA-Sud, production in priority sectors should increase by 40% and the processing rate should be significantly improved.
