At the “Our Ocean” global conference in Panama, The European Union announced allocating 816.5 million euros to protect the oceans in 2023. This announcement caused a surprise at the opening of the conference.

More than 800 million euros have been allocated to finance research to protect marine biodiversity, and the study of the impact of global warming. This is an unprecedented check from the EU to meet a major challenge, that of protecting the oceans, which are seriously threatened by global warming and the overexploitation of its resources. In a press release, the EU stressed that “this amount is one of the largest ever announced by the EU since the launch of the 'Our Ocean' conferences in 2014.” This sum will fund an ocean action plan with 39 commitments in 2023.

Sur cette enveloppe totale, The European Union intends to devote “320 million euros to ocean research to protect marine biodiversity and study the impact of climate change on the ocean.”
