The NGO specializing in monitoring gas and oil projects globally specified in its report that Mozambique is home to 44.9% of these proven reserves that are still in the pre-production stages. Then there are Senegal (15.1%), Mauritania (11.2%) and Tanzania (10%), South Africa (1.9%), Ethiopia (0.8%), and Morocco (0.8%). According to the same report, the development of the various projects that are currently in the pre-production phase and export infrastructures, including in traditional producing countries, would require greenfield investments estimated at $329 billion.
Furthermore, Global Energy Monitor indicates on the other hand that the majority of the natural gas that the new projects are expected to produce is not for domestic consumption, despite the low electrification rates in future African gas hubs such as Mozambique (30%), Tanzania (40%), and Mauritania (47%).
