The Central Bank of Ghana (BoG) has decided to waive mobile transaction fees and increase access to mobile banking in response to the coronavirus (Covid 19) pandemic.

The measure, which comes into force this Friday, March 20, aims to facilitate more efficient payments and promote digital forms of payment, as well as limit the impact of the coronavirus on the Ghanaian economy.

The bank has also decided to increase the cap on daily mobile transactions and double the amount that digital wallets can hold.

BoG said all mobile money transfers of GH100 ($18) and below will not be charged any fees from service providers for the next three months in the country.

“The Bank of Ghana has agreed with banks and mobile network operators on measures to facilitate more efficient payments and promote digital forms of payment for the next three months, subject to review, commencing March 20, 2020 “, notes a press release from the BoG.
