Indeed, the attention of donors is currently focused on the fight against the
COVID-19. This pandemic should not distract those involved in the fight against climate change,
according to the African Development Bank (ADB). This institution marked, on April 22, the Day
Earth Day 2020. Placed under the theme “Climate Action”, this Day was marked by
the 2020 Earth Challenge, and global electoral mobilization through the “Vote for the Earth” campaign.
Earth ".
The AfDB joined the international community to celebrate this year the 50th anniversary of this event.
According to its statements, the AfDB is more determined than ever to continue the fight against the effects of the
climate change in Africa. Each year, it stays on course to help African countries accelerate
their green development, through the implementation of its second Action Plan against climate change
(PACC 2), which covers the period 2016-2020.
. PACC 2 is based on four pillars, drawn from the Paris Agreement, signed at the 2015 Climate Conference:
boost adaptation and climate resilient development in Africa; promote risk mitigation
and low carbon development on the continent; mobilize financial resources to
fund climate action and PACC 2; promote an enabling environment. All these pillars
incorporate gender equality and women's concerns. As COVID-19 puts life at risk
many people, livelihoods and health systems across Africa, the AfDB has
started to mobilize financial resources to help countries on the continent fight against the
pandemic.
At the beginning of April, it approved a donation of two million US dollars from the WHO for Africa, in order to
strengthen the capacities of 41 African countries in infection prevention, testing and
case management. As we celebrate World Earth Day 2020, the AfDB reaffirms its
concern about climate change and global warming, which are trends
worrying for Africa. The challenge for the AfDB is to implement solutions and initiatives
innovative solutions that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating the development
sustainable across the continent.
