At the opening of the 64th meeting of the Committee of Governors of the Central Banks of the Central Banks of the Member States of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held at the headquarters of the BCEAO on Tuesday 30 July last, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou , highlighted the urgent need to respect the criteria of macroeconomic convergence in order to create the conditions conducive to the launch of the Eco currency

The governor of the Central Bank of West African States said that ECOWAS gross domestic product growth slowed in 2023. This slowdown in economic activity, according to him, was accompanied by a rise in inflation that reached a level above the central banks' objective.

For the year 2024, the prospects are better. Economic growth in UEMOA is projected at “7.0%, driven in particular by oil and gas exports”, said the governor of the BCEAO. As for inflation, it should return to the Central Bank's target of 3%.
