This Friday, while most currencies end the week on the rise, the yen weakened.

The US dollar rose 1.4% over the week to 142.84 yen, although down from an overnight high of 143.95.

Australian and New Zealand dollars moved closer to their highs of the year on Friday, as the prospect of further aggressive monetary easing in most developed countries boosted risk sentiment and stock markets. The New Zealand dollar stood at $0.6234, after reaching $0.6269

overnight.

The euro also strengthened to $1,1160, up 0.8% over the week and close to the August peak of $1,1201.

Sterling also rose after the Bank of England kept rates unchanged on Thursday, while its governor said it needed to “be careful not to cut them too quickly or too sharply.” Sterling is up 1.1% for the week so far, to $1.3276, after reaching its highest level since March 2022

The yen weakens as the BoJ meets. The yen remained under pressure on Friday, with investors betting that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) would conclude its monetary policy meeting cautious about further tightening, while the US dollar has its own problems, with markets expecting faster US rate

cuts.

The Chinese yuan hit its highest level in nearly 16 months on Friday, amid reports that Beijing would unveil new economic stimulus measures after a drastic cut in interest rates in the United States, although gains were limited by purchases of dollars from Chinese state banks. The onshore yuan strengthened to 7.0420 per dollar, the firmest level since May 24, 2023, on track for a sequence of six rising sessions
