The Japanese yen fell to its lowest level in nearly two months and other major currencies were also struggling with losses on Monday morning, as the dollar extended a surge triggered by good U.S. jobs numbers on Friday and an escalation of the Middle East conflict. The yen fell slightly to 149.10 per dollar, its lowest level since August 16, before cutting losses to trade around
148.40.The dollar collapsed against the yen and hovered near its lowest level in 2 and a half years against the pound sterling after the Fed changed its tone. The dollar index versus its main peers remained stable.
The euro was $1.0970, down 0.06%.
Sterling also remained stable around $1.3122, after suffering a 1.9% drop last week, its biggest drop since early 2023.
The New Zealand dollar rose 0.1% to $0.6166, pausing a week of declines ahead of a policy decision by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) on Wednesday.
The Indian rupee is expected to hold near its all-time low on Monday after a US jobs report prompted investors to almost completely rule out the likelihood of the Federal Reserve opting for another major rate cut at its next meeting.
