Dans une note signée le 19 décembre 2024, l' Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a officiellement approuvé le retrait du Sénégal et du Cambodge de la List of least developed countries (LDCs) ).

Removing a country from the list of LDCs is an indicator of progress towards long-term development goals. Thus, the UN decision is based on the recommendations of the Committee on Development Policy and validated by the Economic and Social Council in June 2024. It also marks a major step in the development journey of these two countries. A preparatory period of five years was granted to Senegal and Cambodia in accordance with the adopted resolution, to ensure a smooth transition.

According to a note released by the United Nations, during this phase, the two countries will have to develop a national strategy aimed at maintaining and accelerating their socio-economic progress while avoiding any setback in their development gains. Senegal and Cambodia are invited to design smooth transition plans and will also need to collaborate with their commercial and institutional partners to strengthen their economic and social resilience
