The Energy Sector Governance and Competitiveness Support Program is a transformative initiative designed to improve the legal environment in the energy sector in order to address Niger's critical energy deficit while strengthening the economic governance. The program comes at a crucial time when Niger is working to rebuild its economy. The Nigerian economy has shown remarkable resilience despite challenges, with GDP growth climbing to 8.8% in 2024, with oil production expected to rise from 20,000 to 90,000 barrels per
day in 2026.Selon le directeur général du Groupe de la African Development Bank & For West Africa, Lamin Barrow, “this program represents our commitment to supporting Niger's economic recovery and energy independence. By improving access to energy and strengthening governance frameworks, we are helping to lay the foundations for sustainable growth that will benefit all Nigeriens, especially the most vulnerable populations
.”The Bank's support is aimed at ambitious energy goals. It will increase national access to electricity from 22.5% to 30% by 2026 while stimulating the manufacturing contribution to GDP from 2.5% to 3.8%. A key component focuses on the framework for developing renewable energy capacities, with plans for 240 MW of solar energy by 2030 including 50 MW before December 2026.
