On the initiative of the Republic of Benin, the Regional Stock Exchange (BRVM) finalized on November 29, 2021, a unique operation of its kind in the history of the WAEMU bond loan market by syndication. This is an unprecedented operation to reimburse part of its debt on the sub-regional financial market, for a total amount of 217,850,471,796 CFA francs.

Closed by the effective payment of all the holders of the said bonds, this operation started in July 2021, the day after the issue of the eurobond dedicated to the financing of projects with strong impacts on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the Nations. Nations (ODD), the first for an African State. As one of the commitments made by Benin within the framework of the “SDG eurobond” issue, this operation materializes the early repayment of debts contracted under less favorable market conditions and having been used to finance projects eligible for the SDGs. This early repayment allows Benin in particular to make savings on unaccrued interest of more than 36 billion CFA francs which will be injected into various government social impact projects, particularly in the areas of water, health, energy, education, etc.
