Based on figures from the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) in Dakar, indicators of economic activities in the countries of the Economic Union and West African currency (UEMOA) increased significantly during the month of May 2022 compared with April 2022.

According to the central bank, the growth rate of the retail turnover index increased by 5.2 percentage points from 8.7% in April 2022 to 13.9% in May 2022. A month ago, activities in the service sector rose from 8.3% to 12.1% in May 2022, an increase of 3.8 percentage points. Industrial production also increased by 2.4 percentage points.

In addition, the UEMOA business climate indicator performed well, leaving its trend of 100 percent for 101.2 in May 2022. For the BCEAO, the increase in inflation observed in May 2022 was mainly due to the Food component, which contributed 5.3 points to total inflation, and slightly less to the Housing and Transport functions, which each contributed 0.4 points.
