The capital of the African Development Bank (ADB) has now increased to $208 billion from $93 billion so far. In relative terms, this increase is estimated at 125%, the largest in the history of the institution. It was with a touch of pride that its president, the Nigerian Akinwumi Adesina, announced the news last Thursday in Abidjan, the headquarters of the African Development Bank, during a press conference on the sidelines of the Governors meeting. “This capital increase will give us a lot of resources to go further in the development of our continent,” he said. These new resources will give priority to financing projects for access to electricity, transport, water and sanitation. Welcoming the support of the Bank's shareholders who believe in Africa, Akinwumi Adesina expressed the hope that this seventh increase in the Bank's capital would allow “to maintain the AAA rating. This will give the ADB the stability and power to finance its projects,” he hoped. Thanks to this new funding and the implementation of the projects to which it will be allocated, the quality of life of the populations will be improved. “We therefore intend to connect 105 million people to electricity, ensure better food security for 244 million people, better access to transport for 252 million Africans and better access to water and sanitation for 128 million people. “Africans,” said the president of the ADB. No one will be left behind, he rejoiced. Since Africa clearly needs industrialization, resources will also be allocated for this purpose to benefit the private sector, which is the engine of economic growth. As ADB is active in women's empowerment projects, $3 billion in new funding is earmarked for this purpose. Climate change is no exception. Founded in 1964, the ADB is the first development finance institution in Africa, and one of the five largest multilateral development banks in the world. Its priorities are the fight against poverty, the improvement of the living conditions of African populations and the mobilization of resources for the economic and social progress of African member countries. The ADB has 80 shareholder countries (54 African countries, 26 non-African countries, Europe, America and Asia.)
