The African Development Bank (AfDB) has just allocated €48.82 million to the Yeleen solar power plant
in Burkina Faso. Funding was allocated in the form of a loan.
The plant, with a capacity of 52 MW, is being built as part of the "Desert to Power 2020-2024" initiative.
" form the bank. When completed, it will supply energy to 30,000 new households, i.e. 200,000
people approx. The cost of building the infrastructure was estimated at €136.69 million. The rest of the
financing will be mobilized from the French Development Agency, the European Union and the Société
national electricity company of Burkina Faso (SONABEL).
This project is part of the “Yeleen” solar development program implemented by the country. He
includes the installation of photovoltaic power stations, the development of the distribution network
electricity and rural electrification through mini-grids and individual solar installations. The
rural part of the initiative targets 150,000 households.
In 2018, Burkina Faso recorded a national electrification rate of 21%.
