The fifty-two commercial banks operating in the six countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) try as much as possible to reduce their dependence on the Bank of the States of Central Africa (BEAC). At least, this is what emerges from the report on the monetary situation in the sub-region until last July published by the Central Bank.

According to the said document, of which Financial Afrik was able to obtain a copy, "it is important to note that the average volume of offers expressed by credit institutions under this operation fell to 175.6 billion FCFA in May 2019 against 327.3 billion FCFA in June 2018, i.e. a decrease of 151.7 billion FCFA, materializing a gradual reduction in their dependence on the resources of the Central Bank”, informs the BEAC.

This will of the banks to withdraw more and more of the dependence towards the Institution of monetary emission of Central Africa implies new sources of financing for the credit establishments on the interbank market. As a result, commercial banks' requests for liquidity from the Central Bank fell from a weekly average of nineteen operations in June 2018 to just six operations in May 2019.

In any event, the summary table by country as of May 31, 2019 of the average monthly outstanding amounts of BEAC liquidity injections to commercial banks compared to June 2018 sufficiently attests to this: Cameroon, 1.5 billion against 26.5 billion in June 2018; Central African Republic, no operation against 43 million; Congo, 4.7 billion against 51.4 billion; Gabon, 1.2 billion against 19.7 billion; Equatorial Guinea, 10 billion against 147.6 billion; Chad, 77.4 billion, against 38 billion. That is a total discount of 151 billion FCFA.
