Egypt is tightening its grip to face the global energy crisis. Starting in April, Sunday will become a remote work day for the public and private sectors, with the exception of schools, universities, and vital activities. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly during a press conference held on March 28.

This measure is part of a strategy to rationalize energy consumption, as global prices are soaring due to the war in the Middle East. The government thus intends to limit the impact of this crisis on the national economy.

According to the head of government, data analysis revealed a significant drop in electricity and fuel consumption during public holidays. "It is for this reason that we decided to implement this decision for one month on a trial basis," he specified, not ruling out an extension to two days a week if the results are conclusive.

However, several strategic sectors will remain excluded from this measure, including industry, gas stations, sanitation services, and all essential public services, to ensure the continuity of critical activities.

The government is adopting a gradual approach. "We are making these decisions gradually to absorb these shocks and limit the impact on citizens. If this conflict persists, more difficult measures could be implemented," warned Mostafa Madbouly.

The pressure on public finances is already considerable. The energy import bill has sharply increased in recent months, rising from $1.2 billion in January to $1.5 billion in February, then to $2.5 billion in March. This increase is directly linked to soaring oil prices, with Brent crude exceeding $100 per barrel for the fifth consecutive week.

Faced with this situation, authorities have also decided to slow down, for at least two months, major energy-intensive projects. Each ministry will have to draw up a list of the affected construction sites. Furthermore, the quantities of fuel allocated to public entities have been reduced by 30%.
