“Nigeria has been informed of the renaming of the UEMOA currency, the CFA (African Financial Community) to Eco, presented as the single currency of ECOWAS. Nigeria is studying the situation and will respond in due course”, reads the statement [30/12/2019] of a paragraph sent to the press by the Nigerian Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning, led by Zainab Ahmed .

This is the first official release of the Nigerian giant after the announcement of the forthcoming birth of the Eco made by Presidents Ouattara and Macron at the end of last year from Abidjan.

Since that date several false information have continued to circulate on the position of Nigeria.

24 hours before the Abuja press release, Ghana, the 2nd largest economy in West Africa had indicated its willingness to adopt the Eco.

But unlike Abidjan and Paris, Accra leans more towards a flexible and not fixed exchange rate.
