During the year 2018, the number of electronic money accounts in WAEMU stood at 62.9
million against 50.5 million in 2017, an increase of 24.6%.
However, this increase remains below that recorded in 2017, i.e. 38.5%. According to the Bceao which gives
information, Côte d'Ivoire holds 37.4% of electronic money accounts opened in the Union,
followed by Burkina and Benin, with shares of 15.2% and 14.1% respectively.

The 4 subsidiaries of the Orange Group and the 2 subsidiaries of Mtn respectively share 32.5% and 21.2% of the
market shares. The rest of the shares are held by Mobile Cash (2.1%) and Qash Services (0.1%)”, informs
the BCEAO.
She explained that the revival of activity observed with credit institutions was reflected during the
period under review, by the subscription of new customers to the financial services offer, bringing to 43.9%
the proportion of e-money accounts held by banks compared to approximately 37% in 2017.
The user activity rate in the Union stood at 37.7% in 2018, a slight increase of 1.0 point compared to
compared to its 2017 level. This development demonstrates a dynamic in the use of services
digital financials.
