On Friday, January 9, 2026, the government of Odisha approved a project to manufacture 10 GW ingots-platelets and of 5 GW solar cells in the State, for a planned investment of 10 000 crore rupees.

Approval of the project to manufacture platelet ingots comes two days after the government led by The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, has approved the construction of an ingot and wafer manufacturing plant of 10 GW in Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of 6,675 crore rupees by Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. It is the first factory of manufacturing of solar panels upstream of the State. This project, developed in two phases, will have a total capacity of 10 GW for the production of ingots and of wafers and 5 GW for the production of solar cells. It should create more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, including jobs highly qualified. The factory will be located in the special economic zone (ZES) from Tata to Gopalpur.

This installation should strengthen the chain of Upstream solar value in Odisha, reduce dependence on imports of essential solar components and support India's goal of achieving a national solar module manufacturing capacity of 100 GW by 2030.
