Senegal's Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines announced on Saturday, April 4, following official discussions held in Abuja, that Senegal and Nigeria have initiated a coordination of their energy strategies.

Senegal's Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines stated that the initiative is part of strengthening bilateral cooperation. These discussions involved Nigeria's Ministry of Petroleum and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC Ltd). It was an opportunity for the two countries to "explore synergies in key areas such as natural gas development, refining, as well as the development and harmonization of energy policies," the ministry indicated. The rapprochement between Senegal and Nigeria takes place within an already structured regional framework. Both countries are indeed members of the West African Power Pool (WAPP), a mechanism for interconnecting the electricity systems of member states.

The cooperation initiated between Senegal and Nigeria occurs in a context marked by a low level of energy exchanges in West Africa. According to data published in March 2026 by Global Energy Monitor (GEM) in its analysis of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) electricity sector, only 8.5% of the region's electricity production was exchanged between neighboring countries during the 2018-2023 period.
