On Friday, January 16, 2026, the government Senegalese announced in a press release the suspension of imports of potatoes and onions. The objective is to secure the flow of local production.

The Senegalese Ministry of Industry and Industry Commerce announced that the government's measure to freeze potato and onion exports also aims to preserve the price stability and to “avoid an overabundance of imports during the phase of entry into local production”.

According to the ministry's press release, the production Local potato will be available on the market from 15 January 2026, while that of Onions will be one month later, starting on the 15 February 2026. The ministry also indicated that the customs statistics for more recent shows that scheduled imports, carried out in the form of quotas, have been executed at the rate of 95% and that the stocks made up are sufficient to cover market needs until production arrives local.

The trusteeship however invites “operators Economical with cargo at sea or in transit to take contact, in the immediate future, with the competent authorities in order to define the methods of managing these flows”.

She says she counts on “cooperation and diligence” of all actors in order to guarantee “an implementation effective use of this measure in the interests of the market and the consumer.”
