From 16 to 18 September 2025 was held in Accra at Ghana, a regional meeting on the process of setting up a platform of the carbon market in West Africa. This meeting is part of the framework for the implementation of the Regional Climate Strategy.

Arial; mso-fareast-language:en"> The ECOWAS Commission, through the Department of Economic Affairs and Agriculture organized a workshop for the purpose of:

- Present and discuss opportunities offered by the establishment of the regional carbon market,

- Enabling understanding common regional approach;

- Present and improve draft documents developed for this purpose, and

- Adopting a roadmap on next steps of the management of the process with the role of the key actors identified.

According to Yao Bernard KOFFI, Interim Director of Environment and Natural Resources on behalf of the Commissioner for Affairs Economic and agricultural, this process aims to seize opportunities of mobilizing financing related to carbon credit transactions in West Africa; the carbon market being one of the financial instruments within the framework of the Paris Agreement. Experts and representatives of States members present were then invited to contribute to the outcome of this process.

The work was based on several presentations and discussions, on elements of analysis on the state of the market in the region, the state of the global carbon credit market, the characteristics of a credit “high quality” carbon and a draft document on the creative framework of a carbon market platform within ECOWAS style="font-size:14.0pt; font-family: "Bookman Old Style”, serif; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman”; mso-bidi-font-family:arial; mso-fareast-language:en">.

At the end of the work, the draft framework document for the creation of a platform for carbon market within mso-ansi-language:fr; mso-fareast-language:en-us; mso-bidi-language:ar-sa">ECOWAS mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman”; mso-bidi-font-family:arial; Mso-ansi-Language:fr; Mso-Fareast-Language:fr; Mso-bidi-Language:ar-sa">Has been validated by the experts, subject to the taking into account of observations formulated. A road map has also been adopted for the next steps.
