The outstanding public external debt stood at nearly 326.5 billion dirhams (MMDH) in 2018, or 29.2% of gross domestic product (GDP) against 31.3% in 2017, according to the Management. Treasury and External Finance (DTFE), under the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The creditor structure of this debt shows a predominance of multilaterals with a share of 48.8%, followed by bilaterals (28.4%) and international financial markets and commercial banks (22.8%), specifies the DTFE in its December 2018 public external debt statistical bulletin, published on the ministry's website.

In 2018, the same source indicates, public establishments and the Treasury were the main borrowers with respective shares of 54.1% and 45.4%, noting that the Treasury's external debt fell to 13.2% of GDP. , reports the MAP.

The bulletin also indicates that an overall volume of 19.3 billion dirhams was mobilized by the public sector, including 12.9 billion dirhams intended for investment projects of public establishments and enterprises (EEP), 6.3 billion dirhams for the Treasury (5.8 billion dirhams for reform support and 500 million dirhams -MDH- for budget projects) and 900 MDH for the financing of local authority projects.

By currency, the public external debt was dominated by the euro (59.5%), while the US dollar represented 28.4% and the Japanese yen 3.8%, specifies the DTFE, adding that the share of debt at fixed interest rate amounted to 75.2% against 24.8% at variable rate.

The Statistical Bulletin of Public External Debt is a quarterly publication aimed at disseminating public external debt statistics, with a view to supplementing the statistics disseminated under the IMF's Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) and to enable internal and external users to regularly have an overall view of public external debt.
