After a 2.5% decline in June 2019, economic activity (excluding agriculture and forestry) in Senegal resumed its upward trend, recording a monthly increase of 5.3% in July 2019, according to data compiled by the Forecasting and Economic Studies Department (DPEE). The general activity index (IGA) for this activity thus fell from 108.1 points in June 2019 to 113.9 points a month later. This improvement is mainly driven by the secondary sector, which grew by 13.6%. This development is essentially attributable to the performances noted in the manufacture of agri-food products (+10.5%), leather work and the manufacture of travel goods and footwear, and construction (+7.7%). On the other hand, the DPEE reports that oil refining and coking (-9.6%) and cotton ginning production (-21.2%) recorded weak results over the period. At an annual rate, growth of 2.2% was recorded in the secondary sector in July 2019, mainly in connection with the manufacture of agri-food products (+6.2%), construction (+14.8 %) and leather work and manufacture of travel goods and footwear (+149.5%). It was, however, particularly mitigated by the poor results observed in the spinning, weaving and textile finishing branch (-39.1%), extractive activities (-11.3%) and the production of "metallurgy- foundry and manufacture of metal works” (-16%). In the tertiary sector, there was a 2.7% firming up of activity between June and July 2019, mainly due to the performance of trade (+4.8%), transport (+ 9.3%), specialized, scientific and technical activities (+8.6%) and financial and insurance activities (+4.5%). On the other hand, the information and communication activity contracted particularly (-11.1%) over the period. Compared to July 2018, a 4.5% growth in the tertiary sector is noted, supported by trade (+5.9%), transport (+15.7%), real estate activities (+5, 4%) and financial and insurance activities (+6.8%). Regarding the primary sector excluding agriculture and forestry, we note a decline of 3.2%, in monthly variation during the period under review. “This situation reflects a poor performance of fishing (-18.5%), in July 2018, livestock having consolidated by 4.9% over the period”, advances the DPEE. Over one year, the primary sector excluding agriculture and forestry firmed up by 19.2% in July 2019, in connection with the simultaneous good results of the livestock sub-sectors (+19.3%) and fishing (+19.0%). On an annual basis, growth in economic activity excluding agriculture and forestry stood at 9.6% in July 2019 with a general activity index rising from 103.89 points in July 2018 to 113.9 points a year earlier. late. This increase is driven by public administration (+35.9%), tertiary (+4.5%) and primary (+19.2%).
