The President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, will lead a delegation to
G7 Summit held from 24 to 26 August in Biarritz, a seaside resort in the south-west of France.
"After participating on Sunday in a session dedicated to the partnership between the G7 and Africa, the
President Adesina will present the Afawa initiative to the press, alongside President Macron, and in the presence of
Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo, UNICEF's international ambassador," reads a press release received in the Journal de l'économie sénégalaise (Lejecos).
According to the document, the initiative to promote women's access to finance in Africa, known as "Afawa" a
was launched in May 2016 at the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank held in
Lusaka, Zambia. It is a pan financing, which affects women in Africa, and freeing up their entrepreneurial capacity.
This press briefing is part of a Summit focused on reducing inequalities, marked
through a renewed partnership with Africa, which highlights sustainable job creation and support for
entrepreneurship, especially women. The France, which holds the presidency of the G7 in 2019, wants to make
equality between women and men, the great cause of President Emmanuel Macron's five-year term,
a great global cause.
"Investing in women's entrepreneurship is not only a good idea, it also makes sense
economic," the President of the African Development Bank actively supports. Akinwumi Adesina
is also due to participate in a G7 session on climate, biodiversity and oceans on Monday
in the context of the fight against global warming.
This year's G7 Summit presents an unprecedented format: at the initiative of President Macron, eight countries
non-members of the G7, including five Africans, are invited. These are South Africa, Australia, Burkina
Faso, Chile, Egypt, India, Senegal and Rwanda.
The G7 Summit, or "Group of Seven", brings together the Heads of State and Government of
Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the Presidents of the European Commission and Council.
