On Monday, November 17, 2025, the ministry Sierra Leonean Communication, Technology and Innovation a organized a national validation workshop. The objective was to review and refine the first National Open Source Software Policy for the public sector.

Several African countries have already opted for open-source software as part of their digital transformation. It's about particularly from Kenya, Nigeria and Rwanda. It is Sierra Leone's turn. The event brought together some fifty officers from the ministry, administrators of digital systems and actors. According to Stevenson Kakpaetae Kamanda, permanent secretary of the ministry, “by adopting open-source as foundation of public sector technology, we choose solutions that are affordable, secure, and designed for the long-term future of Sierra Leone. This policy paves the way for digital services that are reliable, sustainable and truly owned by the country.”

Its main objective is to promote economic growth and the development of human capital through tools digital, with the ambition of achieving income country status intermediate by 2039.

The Sierra Initiative Leone is in line with a larger continental movement. Countries like Kenya, Nigeria and Rwanda invest in public infrastructure digital technology that uses open-source components to support services such than digital identification, payments and data exchange.
