Find all the economic and financial information on our Orishas Direct application to download on Play StoreAlgeria has taken a first step in modernization of its public transit network with the reception on Sunday, February 2 2026 at the port of Algiers, of a first batch of 335 buses. These vehicles register in the national program to import 10,000 buses intended to renew the passenger transit fleet across the country. The units received are part of a global order for 6,800 buses placed with suppliers in China and Germany.
Announced at the end of 2025, the acquisition plan for 10,000 buses intervenes in a context marked by a resurgence of accidents of the road involving buses, causing numerous deaths and injuries. Beyond the response to this security emergency, the program constitutes the first phase of a wider strategy to modernise transport public, aimed at replacing aging vehicles in a national park estimated at around 84,000 buses last year.
The renewal of the park is accompanied by reforms regulations designed to improve road safety. The authorities have in particular initiated, in November 2025, a revision of the Highway Code in order to strengthen the supervision of the entire security chain, since training in driving schools up to the control of vehicles and conductors. The new system includes, among other things, medical examinations periodic and unannounced for professional drivers, as well as the certification of sworn officers responsible for investigating accidents.
In addition, the security forces will equipped with new technological tools to strengthen controls on the field, including drug tests and drug terminals electronic payment for the settlement of offenses. Through these measures combined, the Algerian authorities intend to improve the safety of users, modernise public transport services and sustainably reduce risks on the roads.
