Combating future pandemics: WHO approves historic agreement
The member countries of the World Health Organization succeeded after more than three years of negotiations in approving a historic agreement on Wednesday aimed at better preparing for and fighting future pandemics. In a statement, WHO said that “WHO member states have taken a major step forward in efforts to make the world safer from pandemics, by developing a draft agreement to be considered at the next World Health Assembly in May.” The countries reached an agreement after a final day and night of negotiations.
Civil war in Sudan: paramilitaries announce the establishment of a civilian government
On the 2nd anniversary of the civil war that left tens of thousands dead and plunged part of the country into famine, the leader of the paramilitaries in Sudan, Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, announced on Tuesday the establishment of a rival government. Meeting in London, officials from fifteen countries including Saudi Arabia and the United States, and international organizations called for an “immediate and permanent ceasefire” in Sudan and stressed “the need to prevent any partition” of this East African country.
